History

Founding and Establishment (2006)
The Calhoun County Humane Society (CCHS) was founded in 2006 in Port Lavaca, Texas, and secured its 501(c)(3) nonprofit tax-exempt status that January. Its creation marked the beginning of a volunteer-driven effort to rescue local animals and increase adoption opportunities

Mission and Operations
CCHS was established as an all-volunteer organization. Its mission involves rescuing dogs and cats from local animal control facilities—including strays or those at risk of euthanasia—and offering them an opportunity for adoption. Animals are provided with vaccinations, testing, and spaying/neutering before being placed with new families.

Collaboration with Local Authorities
The Humane Society has been granted access to public shelter facilities to assist with public education and adoption efforts, reflecting a cooperative relationship with city authorities to improve animal welfare in the community.

Support
CCHS remains a small organization operated with just two employees and volunteers.

While we receive generous veterinary, shelter, and food support from Lewis & Juaniece Madden Foundation, the Louise S. and W. H. Bauer Charitable Trust and general contributions from Network for Good, we rely on individual donations to further our mission.

Community Role and Outreach
Beyond rescues and adoptions, CCHS plays a vital role in educating the public about responsible pet ownership and humane treatment of animals.
